Berkshire at The Grove Apartments

Project Overview

The Berkshire at the Grove Apartments and Townhomes, a historic rehab project in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, is a shining example of how an old, historic building can be transformed into a vibrant living community. The two-year renovation involved the restoration, reusing, and repurposing of the existing infrastructure of a former convent while upgrading its design to provide modern living amenities. The development took place in four distinct sections of the 160,000 sq ft convent building, which were transformed into senior-specific housing, mixed-housing for Workforce Development Housing, a community Create Space center, and a commercial kitchen to support a non-profit’s food distribution programs. The chapel section has been transformed into a performance area and will serve as the centerpiece of the community center.

One of the standout features of the renovation is the retention and restoration of the building’s original architecture. The existing hardwood flooring, cabinetry, millwork, and terrazzo floors were reused and refinished to preserve the building’s historic character while imparting a modern finish. The restoration of metal ceilings, refinished stairwells with original historic elements, and the implementation of Wi-Fi throughout the building are just a few aspects that give a glimpse into the level of detail that went into the renovation of this building.

The Berkshire at the Grove’s construction was a partnership project between General Capital, Bedrock Construction, and Northcentral Construction. The Berkshire at the Grove is a timeless example of how old architecture can be refurbished and transformed into something beautiful and useful for the community, while honoring its history and maintaining its legacy for future generations to come.

The Berkshire at the Grove was a winning project in the Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin’s Projects of Distinction, receiving a gold award for 2024.
